Stump Grinding in Buffalo & Western New York

A leftover stump is more than an eyesore. It is a tripping hazard next to a walkway, an obstacle every time you mow, a nursery for carpenter ants and beetles, and — with species like poplar, willow and locust — a root system that keeps sending up suckers across the lawn for years.

Grinding solves all of it in a single visit. A carbide-tooth wheel reduces the stump and its flare roots to mulch well below ground level, deep enough that you can seed grass, lay sod, plant a new tree or pour a patio over the spot. We backfill the void with the grindings, rake the area level and take the excess away.

Stump Grinding: common questions

Grinding chews the stump into mulch below ground level and leaves the deeper root system to decay naturally in place. Full removal means excavating the entire root plate with machinery — it costs far more, tears up a large area of yard, and is only genuinely necessary when something is being built on that exact spot. For lawns, gardens and replanting, grinding is the right answer for nearly everyone.

Yes, with one adjustment: tell us in advance and we will grind deeper and take the grindings away rather than backfilling with them. Wood chips tie up nitrogen as they break down, so a new tree does better in fresh topsoil. Planting a foot or two off the old centre is better still, since the old root plate is still down there.

Most residential stumps take 30 minutes to two hours including cleanup. Very large stumps, clusters of several, or stumps with restricted access take longer. In almost every case it is a same-day job.

Not necessarily. We run narrow-access grinders that fit through a standard 36-inch gate, which covers most Buffalo backyards. If the only way in is through the house or over a retaining wall, we will find that out during the estimate rather than on the day.

We backfill with the grindings and rake it level as standard. Bear in mind the chips settle over the following months as they decompose, so topping up with topsoil after a season is normal. If you would rather have topsoil and seed straight away, we can do that as an add-on.
